Quem Tramou Judith Teixeira? (Uma História Com Fantasmas)
Keywords:
Judith Teixeira, Modernism, “apparitional lesbian”, “Sodom's literature”Abstract
Portuguese writer Judith Teixeira (1880-1959) can be considered, due to the circumstances surrounding her literary career, the perfect example of what has been called by Terry Castle “the apparitional lesbian”. When she publishes her first book of poetry, Decadência (1923), she sees herself drawn into a scandal, because of the allusions to lesbian eroticism. The book was apprehended and burnt. Before disappearing from the social and artistic milieu, Teixeira published Castelo de Sombras. Poemas (1923), Nua. Poemas de Bizâncio (1926) [poetry]; De Mim. Em que se explicam as minhas razões sobre a vida, sobre a estética, sobre a moral (1926) [conference]; Satânia (1927) [novellas]. Only fifteen years after her death was the silence surrounding herself and her oeuvre broken; even then, so quietly.
