Abstract

In 2015, American writer Jhumpa Lahiri published In Altre Parole, a book written directly in Italian for the first time. Translated into English as In Other Words (2017), the work brings together a set of autobiographical and fictional texts that reflect on the writer’s process of expressing herself in a foreign language. In the fictional short story “The Exchange”, a translator moves to a city whose language she does not speak. In one of the moments of the narrative, the character comes across a tripartite mirror. The objective of this work is to reflect on the mirror as a metaphor that can be used to refer to translation processes with different purposes, as analyzed by Julio-César Santoyo (2013). Thus, the peculiarities of the mirror as conceived by Lahiri as a metaphor for translation are analyzed.
