Abstract

This brief study proposes an analysis of lyricism’s place and functions in the context of French and Italian poetry of the late nineteenth century. More specifically, we will discuss the representation of the lyrical subject in the poetry of Dino Campana and Antonin Artaud through the lenses of the equivalences which are presented in their respective works. We will focus initially on the leitmotifs of the mythical and the oneiric representations which constitute the fundamental elements of fin-de-siècle aesthetics.
Furthermore, we will argue that romantic lyricism has been put to the test so that a new poetic discourse could be invented. This discourse shall be seen as a response towards the ever-growing awareness of the precariousness of being. From this perspective, we intend to shed some light on the specific features and the polymorphic challenges imposed by a modern and innovative poetic style. This style gave rise to a subversive annihilation of the poetic ego and triggered the fragmentation of a lyricism traditionally envisaged as romantic.
