We identify influential figures in French literature from the second half of the 19th century using an original method of Named Entity Recognition and basic techniques from Social Network Analysis. Using citation networks of directed graphs and co-citation networks of indirected graphs, we study the most cited and influential authors and savants of the 19th century using a corpus of literature criticism. We compare the predictions made by our methods to observations from literature in order to draw interesting conclusions from correlations about the events that formed the interdisciplinary literature of this period.
