Abstract

This study aims at analysing the representation of the characters, the motifs and the topics that create the medieval universe of Valter Hugo Mãe’s o remorso de baltazar serapião (2006). Highlighting the topic of “(gender) oppression”, this article mainly focuses on the function of the medieval setting in constructing a critical literary discourse about the social role of women today.

  • Ana Rita Gonçalves Soares

    is currently teaching Portuguese at the IES San Clemente as a Scholarship holder from the Auxiliares de Conversación Programme. She received a MA on Medieval Studies (2014-2015) and a MA on Literary and Cultural Studies (2013-2014) from the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain). She holds a BA on European Languages and Literatures (2010-2013) from the Universidade do Minho (Portugal). Her current research focuses on the recreation of the Middle Ages in contemporary Iberian literature. Institutional address: IES San Clemente.
