Abstract

An updated version of Aurora for the postmodern age seems to be the one found in Francis Ford Coppola’s short-film Captain EO, which incidentally bears many similarities to the deity it is named after. Aurora (Eos) is known to sleep in the ocean streams (Hymn. Hom. Ven.226). When she wakes up, Aurora rises to the skies (Mimn.fr. 12 West). In direct relation to the myth and ancient tradition, she is guided by the Morning Star (Ov. Met.4.629-30) to illuminate the sky with saffron light to finally give way to the Sun and his chariot, because it is the Sun’s task to brighten the day. Captain EO is entrusted with a mission to a desolate planet, but he fails to find the light of the homing beacon that  should guide him to this destination. Although EO displays the colors of a failed Aurora ab initio, he manages to claim back his fame and succeed in his expedition, with the help of his crew members who hope for a well-accomplished mission: to successfully bring light to that planet (and restore their once lost reputation).
